Vegetable Momos Recipe | Healthy Steamed Dumplings

Steamed, soft, and packed with fresh vegetables, vegetable momos are the perfect healthy snack or light dinner option. Originally from Tibet and Nepal, they’ve now become a pan-India street food favourite. In this recipe, we make a guilt-free version — no frying, minimal oil, maximum taste.


Ingredients (for 15–18 momos)

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (or all-purpose flour for a softer texture)

  • 1 cup finely chopped mixed veggies (cabbage, carrot, beans, capsicum)

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped

  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste

  • 1 tsp soy sauce

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 1 tsp oil (optional)


Method

Step 1: Prepare Dough

  1. Mix flour with a pinch of salt and knead into a soft dough using water.

  2. Cover and let it rest for 20 minutes.

Step 2: Make the Filling

  1. Heat 1 tsp of oil in a pan (optional).

  2. Add onion, ginger-garlic paste, and sauté lightly.

  3. Add chopped veggies, soy sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir-fry for 3–4 minutes on high flame so veggies stay crunchy.

Step 3: Shape Momos

  1. Divide the dough into small balls and roll them into thin circles.

  2. Place 1 spoonful of filling in the centre.

  3. Fold into pleats and seal the edges.

Step 4: Steam

  1. Arrange momos in a greased steamer basket.

  2. Steam for 10–12 minutes until the outer cover looks glossy.

  3. Serve hot with spicy tomato chutney.


Tips for Perfect Momos

  • Use whole wheat flour for a healthier version, but half maida + half wheat makes them softer.

  • Don’t overcook — they’ll become chewy.

  • For a twist, try fillings like paneer, mushrooms, or sprouts.
