A Sweet Memory from Childhood

Before I tell you about Tripura's famous Queen Pineapple, let me share a small childhood memory.

Growing up in Hisar, Haryana, we did not see pineapple very often. In those days, transportation networks were limited, and most towns depended largely on locally grown fruits and vegetables. Seasonal produce arrived in abundance, but exotic fruits were occasional treats.

Every summer vacation, we would travel to Delhi to spend time at my nani's house. I still remember how excited I would be when my mausi, Kusum Aunty, sometimes brought home a pineapple. It felt special, almost luxurious. The fruit was carefully sliced and shared among everyone. What I loved most was its unique taste—sweet, yet pleasantly tangy. In fact, I remember it being more tangy than sweet!

As the years passed, India’s transportation and supply chains improved dramatically. Pineapples gradually became available in Hisar as well, though nowhere near as abundantly as they are today. Now they can be found almost year-round in markets across the country, a testament to how far our agricultural and distribution systems have come.

Yet, despite enjoying pineapples for decades, I never knew about Tripura's celebrated Queen Pineapple variety. I discovered its fascinating story only recently while reading about the state's efforts to take this remarkable fruit to global markets. Its journey from the lush hills of Tripura to international recognition is truly inspiring, and I felt it was worth sharing with fellow food lovers.

Tripura’s famous Queen Pineapple is stepping into the global spotlight. Recently featured in national news, this sweet and aromatic fruit has become a symbol of the Northeast’s agricultural success story. With its unique taste, geographical indication (GI) status, and growing export market, the Queen Pineapple is proving that India's traditional fruits can compete on the world stage.

What Makes Queen Pineapple Special?

The Queen Pineapple was declared the state fruit of Tripura in 2018. Known for its golden-yellow flesh, exceptional sweetness, rich aroma, and low fibre content, it is considered one of the finest pineapple varieties grown in India.

Apart from its delightful flavour, the fruit is packed with nutrients such as:

  • Vitamin C

  • Potassium

  • Magnesium

  • Calcium

  • Iron

  • Dietary fiber

These nutrients make it both a delicious and healthy addition to the diet.

A Fruit with GI Tag Recognition

The Queen Pineapple received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which officially recognises its unique origin and quality. This tag helps protect the identity of the fruit and increases its value in domestic and international markets.

The GI status has also encouraged farmers to maintain traditional cultivation methods while improving production standards.

Tripura’s Growing Pineapple Economy

Pineapple cultivation plays an important role in Tripura’s rural economy. The fruit is grown across several districts, particularly in the hilly regions where the climate and soil conditions are ideal.

According to reports, thousands of hectares of land are dedicated to pineapple cultivation, producing a substantial annual harvest. The government has been actively promoting the fruit through festivals, marketing initiatives, and export opportunities.

From Farms to Global Markets

Tripura's Queen Pineapple is no longer limited to local markets. In recent years, fresh pineapples and processed products have been exported to countries including:

  • United Arab Emirates (UAE)

  • Bangladesh

  • Germany

The growing demand has created new opportunities in:

  • Food processing

  • Packaging

  • Transportation

  • Agricultural marketing

This expansion is helping improve rural incomes while showcasing Indian agricultural excellence internationally.

More Than Just Fresh Fruit

The pineapple's value extends beyond fresh consumption. Farmers and entrepreneurs are creating a variety of products, such as:

  • Pineapple juice

  • Jams and jellies

  • Candies

  • Squash

  • Processed fruit products

These value-added products help reduce wastage and generate additional income for local communities.

Why Food Lovers Should Try Queen Pineapple

If you enjoy naturally sweet fruits, the Queen Pineapple deserves a place on your plate. Its intense aroma, juicy texture, and balanced sweetness make it ideal for:

  • Fruit salads

  • Smoothies

  • Desserts

  • Cakes

  • Tropical mocktails

  • Fresh snacking

Its superior flavour profile has earned it the title of the "Queen" among pineapples.

The Road Ahead

As Tripura prepares to showcase its pineapple heritage through national and international events, the Queen Pineapple stands as a shining example of how traditional farming, government support, and global marketing can work together.

From the lush hills of Northeast India to dining tables around the world, Tripura’s Queen Pineapple is carrying India's taste far beyond its borders.
